GURU POORNIMA - ORIGIN FROM SAI BABA THE MASTER BY BHAGAVAN SRI BHARADWAJA.
(On the occasion of Gurupoornima festival on July 31).
Gurupoornima is celebrated on the full moon day which is falling on the 12nd of July this year, is considered holy to all spiritual aspirants for propitiating their respective Gurus.
One day in the year 1908, Krishnaji Noolkar who came from Pandharpur was at chavadi.Baba told Shyama “Tell that old man (Noolkar) to worship the pillar near the Dhuni.” As soon as Shyama came back after conveying Baba’s words, Sai said “All of you can also worship”.Shyama asked “Lord! Why should we worship the pillar, we shall worship you” .Though Baba initially did not agree, he finally accepted as Shyama insisted on it. Meanwhile Noolkar found out from the calendar that it was Gurupoornima (Birthday of Vyasa Maharshi). Tatya, Dadakelkar, Shyama and others gave dhoti (a white cloth that Hindu men wear) to Baba and worshipped him. From then onwards it became customary to celebrate Gurupoornima at Shirdi. This is the only festival which was verbally told by Baba to his devotees to celebrate.
Then why did Baba tell Noolkar to worship the pillar? It is only for the welfare of the devotees, Baba suggested to worship the pillar , indicating the meaning “Serve your master.” Sadguru never says ‘Worship me’. Jnani views everyone as the forms of the God. How can he have any disciples? Ramana Maharshi said one who supposes himself to be a Guru is not fit for that name itself. Since Sai did not say so, HE IS SADGURU.
It is the pillar which supports the roof of the house. It is firmly planted inside the earth. That is its strength. It is with this strength only the pillar protects all the inhabitants of the building .Similarly Sadguru also firmly plants himself in the devotion towards his Guru and with the steadfast attention on self in the form of devotion to his Guru ,the Sadguru will protect those who seek his shelter-just like the pillar! To worship the Guru’s form in an appropriate way is the perception Baba. Not only that ,Sri Sai told Sai Saranananda that he did penance for a long time in the cave under the pillar in the mosque.
It is Sadguru, the manifestation of the entire universe, who is the main pillar which is the base for the entire world called Dwarakamayi that provides shelter and opportunity to accomplish the four Purusharthas (objects of man’s life) like Dharma (Righteousness), artha (wealth), kama (fulfillment of legitimate desires) and moksha (liberation).That’s why in Islam such great saints are called ‘KUTUB’ –Pillar of righteousness.
The body called Dwarakamayi is supported by the pillar called Spine, which is present from base to its apex i.e. from Mooladhara to sahasraadhara. This is the symbol of that Sadguru who contains in Himself all the spiritual states. This way opens by itself without any effort to those who serve Guru continuosly, thereby the final object of ‘Divine Union’ or Self Realization is attained –just as attained by Sai through his Guru. That is what Sai conveyed.

GURU POORNIMA - ORIGIN BY BHAGAVAN SRI BHARADWAJA
Man will learn from small words to big things in his life from somebody else. As part of this, scientific subjects from nature also require teaching from others. Man has to learn from the best Guru to understand the spiritual subjects from the same nature .In avadhootha- uddavageetha in Bhagavatam, a Poorna purusha, who is even praised by Lord Krishna – tells what he has learnt from the 24 Gurus in the nature and how he attained perfection. Lord Krishna takes it as the best standard and teaches Uddava .In a similar way, the same preachings are taught to us in the form of SRI GURU CHARITRA- which is the life history of the first two incarnations of Lord Dattatreya. The third incarnation of Lord Dattatreya – Sri Manikya Prabhuvu told his devotees that he attained knowledge (Jnaanam) in a similar way.
An ordinary life (paamara jeevitam ) without Spiritual knowledge increases tendencies like jealousy, hatred, affection, which changes both the individual and turns the society upside down. The one and only one ultimate goal of life- peace and contentment will not be present. Even though there is moon present in the sky on NEW moon day, there is no reflection of sunrays on to the Earth. With out Guru, human life will be similar to a boat in the midst of the ocean without a sailor and compass needle.
This endless universe, which became the form of Guru to all the Holy persons mentioned above, helped them attaining Brahma Jnaanam , and which molded peace and contentment in their form, transforms itself into an ocean of misery for an ordinary person.
Among the innumerable creatures in this creation, fortunately there are several spiritual stalwarts who are of various grades of spiritual maturity. The immediate presence of true Guru is myriad times more effective, but such association is not possible for everyone to the needed extent. There are some Perfect Masters, who will help us to understand that there is a spiritual life that can give complete peace and contentment .Their association will help in radiating our lives with the light of soul just like the increasing radiance of moon from Suddha Padyami (first day after new moon day).This blossoming will be complete with the association of Guru. GURU PORNIMA reveals the same truth.
Depending on the merits of previous lives, several people would get the opportunity for being in the immediate presence of Guru. However, the end result will depend on their level of spiritual maturity. Not only that, one should not let the immediate presence of Guru to submerge behind the clouds of life -- happiness and sadness. Then only the worthiness of that firm devotee will increase just like the ripening of fruit in the presence of tree & like the water lily in the presence of moon. If this development is compared to different stages of moon, then attaining complete perfection is compared to Poornima (full moon).
If a devotee develops intense desire on this state and tries to lead his life for it, then only there will be steadiness in the service of Guru .So the main objective of a seeker is to print on his mind clearly the complete state of realization (poorna stithi) of his Guru .For that very reason ,it is a tradition, practiced from ancient times to worship Guru on Guru Poornima. For this, the best instrument is parayana of SRI GURU CHARITRA.
As there are several stages in the blossoming of soul as mentioned above, in a similar way there will be some changes too in the life history of mankind. If the incarnations of previous Gurus are considered as different stages, then the INCARNATION of SRI SAI is GURU POORNIMA for the mankind.
Sri Sai showed unerring, at one-ment with all gods of Hindus, all saints, all creatures and with so-called inanimate objects. There is no other form of Guru in history of mankind that revealed God is one for all human beings and differences in religions is irrelevant for His worship
For any religious follower ,the climax in the religion is revealed with in Himself. So that’s why Paul Reps, a western Scholar said “ The incarnation of Sri Sai is a great mile stone in the Spiritual history of mankind. This is beginning of new era.” Having being blessed with the devotion of such great Sad guru, let us make this a more meaningful Guru Poornima.
As Sri Sai said “Be the real and true sons for the mother (Dwarakamayi) and fully stock your treasury.”
The perfect blossoming of spiritual values in a genuine mystic,the peace and bliss he experiences and emanates are the promises spiritual life holds out to humanity. Sri Sai Baba demonstrated that one spirit of Wisdom of all saints is HE.

Q: Isn't it said that human life is the best. Then even after doing many sins, how is it possible to obtain human life and face difficulties?
A:"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do naught unto others what you would not have them do unto you." This is the secret of Dharma. The three elements of action, i.e., thought, word and deed (manasaa, wacaa, karmanaa--Trikaranalu) should work in this way. That is practicing Dharma. Then man will perform his duties with out expecting any result. He will get good births as a result of this goodness. When he gets wisdom and requests freedom from rebirth ,then he will surrender himself to a Sadguru, and by his teachings and grace ,he attains salvation (mukthi) .The above principle is disregarded by everyone of us because of the influence of ill feelings like selfishness, affection. To experience the sins committed out of affection and hatred to other person, one will get rebirth as human being to face the same suffering from them. When a person becomes unrighteous to every individual due to increased brutality, then this results in rebirth as animals.The reason being all animals behave the same way. If that behavior becomes very extreme then he will face the punishment in the hell.
In general all the creatures will do these three types of sins in any particular birth, so they have to face the results of this Karma.
Even then, at a particular stage, only human beings have the capacity to understand this principle, so human birth is said to be the best. The best part of the entire tree is fruit. Cycles of birth and rebirth is the punishment for not improving that thinking capacity in the Satsang, and hiding it beneath the ill feelings- affection and hatred. All the holy religious texts preach that the human body, affection etc are contemptible, as human have this ignorance of wasting the life. Human life will be the best if this truth is realized.
There is no good deed that can result in freedom from rebirth. The merit of good deeds will come in the form of wealth and prosperity. Then more people will become slaves for ego, do more sins and face more problems. When one surrenders to a Perfect Master, then the liking for the rewards of good deeds is destroyed and it results in freedom from rebirth. In order to obtain the association and grace of the Perfect Master, it is essential to do parayana of SRI GURU CHARITRA and SRI GURU GEETHA.So that's why Lord Krishna in Bhagavadgita chapter 4 and sloka 34 ,said to surrender oneself to a Brahma Jnaani (Tatwa darsi – one who has seen the truth). Due to influence of Kali, even without having Brahma Jnaanam people delude so. In order to understand a true Tatwa Darsi, devout reading of the above Holy texts, "Life History of Akkalkot Swamy ", "Life history of Avadhootha – Venkayya Swamy" should be done.The rest of the information is available in those Holy texts.
